A table arranged for conversation

A beautiful table should still make it easy to eat, pass dishes and see the person opposite you. Flowers can create atmosphere without occupying the whole centre. Plan the practical space before deciding how much decoration to add.

Start with the place settings

Lay out the plates, glasses and serving dishes first. The remaining space tells you what kind of floral arrangement will work. A narrow table may suit several small vessels better than one wide centrepiece.

Check the seated view

Sit at the table and look across it. Keep flowers low enough for easy conversation, or choose a design that leaves the sightline genuinely clear. Make sure the vases are stable and that petals will not crowd food.

Repeat one detail

A flower colour echoed in a napkin or a simple ribbon can tie the table together. You do not need matching everything. Leave room to move dishes as the meal develops, and keep arrangements away from heat. The atmosphere is successful when the flowers support the gathering rather than making everyone work around them.
