Your bouquet's first day at home

A little attention when flowers arrive gives you a useful starting point for caring for them. Set aside a clean vase, a clear work surface and a few minutes before putting the arrangement on display. Follow any specific instructions supplied with your bouquet.

Prepare the vase

Wash the vase thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. If flower food is supplied, use it according to the packet instructions rather than guessing the concentration. Keep the water clear of leaves and loose plant material.

Arrange with care

Remove wrapping that is intended only for transport and follow the florist's guidance for tied stems or arrangements in a container. If the bouquet needs trimming, use a suitable clean tool and work carefully. Avoid crushing or forcing stems into a narrow opening.

Choose its resting place

A cool display position away from strong direct sunlight and heat is a useful starting point. Check the water level regularly, especially during the first days. Refresh water and care for stems as advised for the flowers you have. Different varieties age at different speeds, so an arrangement may need gentle editing as individual stems finish.
