A watering routine built around observation

Watering becomes easier when it starts with a check rather than a fixed weekly appointment. Pot size, growing medium, weather and the plant itself all affect how quickly a container dries. Treat a reminder as an invitation to look, not an instruction to pour.

Check before watering

Look at the growing medium and learn how the pot feels when it is recently watered compared with when it is drier. Follow the moisture preference of the particular species. Two plants beside each other may need attention on different days.

Let excess water leave

Use a container with drainage and allow excess water to drain away. Check saucers and decorative outer pots afterwards. A beautiful cover pot should not become a hidden reservoir around the roots.

Keep a useful note

For the first few weeks, record when you checked, whether water was needed and any change in the leaves. You are looking for a pattern, not a perfect timetable. If a plant looks unhappy, check the growing conditions before adding more water. A wilted leaf alone does not tell you whether the pot is too wet or too dry.
