Choosing a planter that works as beautifully as it looks

A planter has two jobs: it frames the plant and supports practical care. The right choice feels natural in the room while leaving enough access to lift, water and check the plant. Start with function, then choose the finish.

Understand the two-pot approach

Keeping the plant in its nursery pot inside a decorative cover pot can make maintenance straightforward. Lift the inner pot out for watering when practical, allow it to drain, and return it once excess water has stopped running.

Think in proportions

Check the diameter and height of the nursery pot before buying a cover. Leave enough room to remove it comfortably. A tall, narrow vessel may look elegant but needs to be stable beneath a broad plant.

Choose a calm material palette

A small group of similar finishes usually feels more deliberate than many competing colours. Try warm white, natural clay or a restrained olive accent. Protect furniture with an appropriate waterproof tray and check it regularly. When a plant actually needs repotting, choose the next container for its roots and growing requirements, not simply to fill the decorative pot.
