The first week with a new houseplant

Bringing a plant home is a good moment to slow down. Instead of immediately repotting, feeding and moving it around, begin by understanding what you have bought and the conditions it came from. A simple arrival routine helps you notice changes.

Make a clear starting point

Keep the plant label or record its botanical name. Check the pot, leaves and growing medium, and take a photograph. Look underneath leaves and around stems while you are getting familiar with its normal appearance.

Find a suitable position

Choose a spot that matches the plant's light needs and avoids obvious temperature extremes. Give it space from other plants while you check its condition. Keep it accessible so you can inspect it without repeatedly rearranging the room.

Respond to what you find

Check moisture before watering and let any excess drain. Avoid making several care changes at once unless there is a clear problem. Contact the seller if the plant arrives damaged or looks concerning, and include photographs. Your first goal is a consistent environment and a useful understanding of the plant, not an immediate transformation.
