Reading the light in your home

A room can feel bright to us while offering very different growing conditions across its floor plan. Before bringing a plant home, spend a day noticing the windows, curtains and patches of direct sunlight. This small exercise is more useful than choosing a plant by room name alone.

Map three positions

Compare the windowsill, a nearby table and the far side of the room. Buildings, trees and tinted glass can change how much light enters. Check each position at more than one time of day rather than relying on a single glance.

Match the plant to the place

Read the care requirements for the exact plant you are buying. Bright indirect light, direct sun and lower light are different conditions. Low-light tolerance does not mean a plant can grow without light.

Review the arrangement

A position that worked in summer may change as the season shifts. If growth becomes weak or stretched, reconsider the light alongside watering and overall care.
