Choosing the right vase for your flowers

The same flowers can look completely different in two vases. Height, neck width and material all influence how stems sit and how much of the arrangement you notice. Begin with the bouquet rather than trying to force it into your favourite vessel.

Consider support

A narrower opening can help a small bunch stand together. A wider bowl creates a looser silhouette but may require a different style of arrangement. Make sure the container is stable when filled with water and stems.

Keep the palette connected

Clear glass lets stems become part of the composition. An opaque cream or clay vessel puts more attention on the flowers themselves. Choose one relationship to repeat, such as the warmth of a petal or the finish of a nearby object.

Check the practical details

Look for a watertight interior and an opening you can clean properly. Protect delicate furniture beneath the vase. For a dining table, sit down and check the view across it before finalising the height. A good vase makes the flowers easy to enjoy and easy to care for; it does not need to be the most decorative object in the room.
